TECO THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS TO OPEN 15 YEAR ANNIVERSARY SEASON WITH AWARD WINNING PLAY, LEONARD’S CAR, AT NEWLY RENOVATED THEATER HOME

DALLAS—This past weekend more than 600 people attended the community-wide celebration for TeCo’s newly renovated theatre home, the Bishop Arts Theater Center with nearly 70 local performers on stage. The excitement continues with our season opener, an award winning script, Leonard’s Car by local playwright, Isabella Russell-Ides. The show opens on October 9th and run through October 25th, Thursday – Saturday, 8PM nightly at the Bishop Arts Theater Center.

Isabella Russell-Ides, recent winner of the 2008 DFW Critics forum for Best New Play [Coco & Gigi], is remounting her 2006 hit Leonard’s Car with an African American cast. “The idea of mounting Leonard’s Car with an African-American cast was irresistible. I remember reading a review of the recent African-American Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, done on Broadway with James Earle Jones. The reviewer complained that certain ethnic discrepancies bumped the audience out of the play. As a playwright, I was pretty certain that had Tennessee Williams till been alive, he would have jumped at the opportunity to re-style his classic. Changing ethnicities invites tantalizing theatrical challenges. For me not so much the language itself because I write a heightened theatrical language that belongs more to the culture of theatre than any particular ethnicity, but an opportunity to move farther outside of one’s known environment is an invitation to adventure,” commented Russell-Ides. With a new subtitle [when the rainbow is NOT enuf], a powerhouse cast and a design dream-team this promises to be an electric evening of theater.

In 2008 Isabella’s plays saw productions all across the USA, including New York City. Her plays have garnered Leon Rabin Awards, The Column Awards, BEST Of FEST accolades as well as rave write-ups in the press. Her play crafting has been characterized as “ingenious, if not genius” by Lawson Taitte, her dialogue tagged as “crisp, clever and fresh” by the Dallas Observer, “gorgeous” by Playwrights Playground, NYC and “more significant than any work I’ve seen by local writer” Mark Lowry noted in the Star-Telegram.
